An event on the astrology of the Orphic Hymns
My Orphic comrade in arms Drew Levanti will be giving a talk that will be livestreamed and in person in NYC on Thursday, 9/7 at 7pm!
On Thursday, September 7th, at 7pm EST my collaborator and co-teacher Drew Levanti will be giving a live-streamed talk about the connections between the Orphic Hymns and astrology. You may know Drew from the astro-scene, or from the class STAR: An Orphic Initiation that we taught this past Spring. (And will be teaching again in the Fall…stay tuned for that announcement soon!)
As part of his talk, Drew will be reading selections from my translations of four Hymns, and I’ll be in the live audience (as you should be too, if you’re in the NYC area) so I hope to see some of you there!
I’m super excited to see my translations being read this way out in the world, and to witness the emergence of an Orphic renaissance, as embodied and priest-ed into existence by Drew, who is a formidable astrologer and teacher in his own right.
More Details on the Content Covered in “The Astrology of the Orphic Hymns”
Since you’re a reader of this newsletter, you might already be familiar with the basics: the Orphic Hymns are a collection of 87 short religious poems, representing a Greek mystery tradition that originated in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. This poetic collection formed the backbone of initiation rites that guided the devotees to remember their true place in the Cosmos, and have influenced thinkers from Plato to Ficino.
In this talk, Drew will be diving deeper into four of the Orphic Hymns to planetary deities: Selene (Moon), Ares (Mars), Kronos (Saturn), and Apollo (the Sun). Each hymn offers insight into the planets’ unique characters and their role in the cosmic dance. Drew will give special attention to Apollo, whom the Orphics associated with harmonization and the cosmic balance of the equinoxes.
Attendees will come away with deepened gnosis of the planets, including some of the astrological references found in the selected hymns.
You can attend the event live or by video streaming. In both cases, tickets range from $5-30 on a sliding scale.
If you’re in the area and want to come in person, it will be held at the Theosophical Society space on East 53rd Street. Use this link to connect to the live event meetup page for details. The tickets use the same link as for the livestream event.
