Musical Settings to Helios, Hermes, & Selene (Moon)!
Dr. Katina Mitchell, soprano, harpist, & professor of music, offers her interpretations of three hymns
Happy Fall Equinox!!!
Having just “returned” from the online Astromagia 2024 conference, I’m feeling all the love and inspiration that gathering always brings to my heart. I’m still working on figuring out the best way to get that content to you, but it will be forthcoming soon.
In the meantime, I’m beginning to feel the reach of my little (enormous?) translation project—not just in the esoteric community, but now out also in the musical world!
This Spring I was contacted by Dr. Katina Mitchell, a professional classical musician, harpist, and faculty member of Palomar College in California, who asked me if I would be amenable to her setting a few of my hymn translations to music and recording them for her Youtube channel. Ummm...yes PLEASE!
The triad is finished now, and I’m so pleased to present them here for you all! Please give Katina a lot of love in her Youtube comments. She can tell you more about her process, but essentially she has used ancient Pythagorean and medieval musical theories to inform her interpretations. And you’ll see that her voice is positively angelic, which gives the hymns a very mysterious vibe — something akin to traditional Byzantine liturgical music, or perhaps the work of the Western medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen.
For what it’s worth, I’m always interested to see what folks have done with my translations, and would love to hear other musical or artistic interpretations as well. You can always contact me here or through my website email: info@kristinmathis.com.
I’ll end with my friend Emma’s favorite sign-off:
✨Blessed fucking be!✨
