Snippet #2: Ancient Sacred Timekeeping & Eclipses

My hot take on Eclipse Panic

i love you to the moon

“You MUST see this eclipse!”

“Whatever you do, DON’T go outside and watch the eclipse!”

It seems like everyone has an opinion on whether or not watching eclipses is good or bad luck. And for sure, some traditions/lineages do have specific prohibitions around eclipse-watching. BUT…

For thousands and thousands of years, there were people, often priests or priestesses, tasked with the sacred duty of observing eclipses (as well as other celestial and weather-related phenomena). We have their written measurements and descriptions of events, so we KNOW they did this, and it’s clear that in many if not most cases, it was part of their spiritual practice of monitoring the movements of the celestial bodies, which is to say, the gods.

In this short, off-the-cuff, unedited “Snippet” (interrupted by my super pounding on my door, lol) I talk about ancient timekeeping and what it has to teach us about eclipses today…including how to reframe thinking about the great “To Watch or Not to Watch” eclipse debate.

Enjoy!
