Stars, Tarot, & the Orphic Cosmos
A Conversation with Lex Hesperus in the latest issue of The Rebis!
I’m a book nerd. I prefer paper and ink to digital any day. So I’m so excited to be included in this absolutely GORGEOUS print volume of The Rebis, a journal of art and writing exploring the Tarot in all its endless permutations!
And even better, I got to be in conversation with heretical heirophant, queer witch, & facilitator of liminal experiences, LEX HESPERUS — one of my favorite people with whom to chat about all things Orphic and ancient Sicilian.
Our article, “From Earth to Starry Sky: The Stars and the Orphic Cosmos,” re-frames The Star tarot card (and the Tarot itself) through the lens of ancient Orphism.
Rather than seeing the cards as predictors of an inevitable outcome, we explore how Orphic ideas of “co-weaving” cosmic relationships can help open up new (and very ancient) liberatory understandings of destiny, divination, and the stars.
Oh — and the article includes my translation of the Orphic Hymn of Astra (the Stars)!
Of course, the Tarot post-dates the Orphics by at least 1500 years, but this is what I think is so exciting about Orphic cosmology — the insights and outlook of its Mysteries aren’t just some interesting old curiosity, suitable for history nerds and academics. It’s a way of perceiving and interacting with and co-creating the world around us, a LENS through which we can look at anything — Tarot included - to open up possibilities for collective liberation and renewal. (Because the Orphic “self” is a very embedded, inter-woven, and hence communal being.)
