Orpheus’ dismembered head singing out oracles to his student, Musaios, who inscribes the holy words down on a wax tablet with a stylus. (No, that’s not an ancient laptop! Though, come to think of it, it sorta is.) Red-figure vase c.410 BCE. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

It’s been awhile since I posted anything. That’s mostly due to the nature of my chronic illness (Long Covid), which comes and goes in waves. But it’s also because behind the scenes, I’ve been working on the manuscript for my book that’s forthcoming with Revelore Press in 2024!

This will be the first of a series of translations I’ll be releasing in book form, and it’s what might be called a devotional —a short-ish selection of around 25 hymns designed to be used by practitioners in their daily practice. It will be divided into selections for each daysof the week, and will be accompanied by my own artwork. (!) The hymns themselves will have minimal commentary, since it’s really designed to be more of an “altar book” than an academic tome, but the volume will have a short introduction explaining both the background of the hymns and my approach to translation.

So, without further ado, here’s a peek at what I’ve been working on. This excerpt is taken from the section entitled “History and Background of the Orphic Hymns,” and it’s designed to introduce you to the most up-to-date scholarship on the “who, what, when, where, and why” of the Orphic Hymns.

What you see here is only part of what will appear in the book, but I always enjoy getting a look behind the scenes at what authors are working on, so I decided to make this available to you all—my staunchest supporters through thick and thin.

Let me know if you’d like to receive more sneak peeks at topics like how the hymns were used, the materia magica of the hymns, etc. You can always reach me through the comments, the Substack Notes feature, or on IG: (at)cosmicspiritauntie. I’m always open to requests for topics you’re curious about!
